For a long time I thought I would happily spend my entire career in Liverpool. I have grown up here and my family and friends live in around Merseyside. On top of that, following 3 years as an undergrad student in Newcastle I have made a successful start to my career working for Liverpool based IRS for just over 7 years. However, similarly to myself, my partner also a specialised career where picking which city you work in isn’t always easy or even possible. With her finding her ideal job based in Birmingham, I for the first time started considering my options for continuing my career elsewhere in the country. Thankfully with the increase in internet technology and the expansive customer base at IRS, I have been able to continue working for IRS, not in Liverpool but rather 90 miles away in Staffordshire.
You may think that this would make some job aspects difficult; I know I did before I made the move. An essential part of work is constant communication with colleagues. The use of the internet and remote emails, plus Skype means that I can get into contact with anyone in seconds. The use of VPN means that I can keep up to date with my emails in real time and I can access the IRS database as if I was in Tower Street.
As well as being a huge personal benefit, being based in Staffordshire also opens greater flexibility in serving our customer base in the midlands and in the South. By knocking one and a half hours off any journey to the southern half of the country I can take the burden off my other colleagues in attending these sites for surveys. With our growing hospital customer base and with the increase of a lot of new dental CBCT’s popping up around the country, I am never short of surveys to attend. I am also hopeful that further down the line it will help strengthen IRS’s relationship with our southern customers.
I would say it’s been a successful first few months in my new venture and I look forward to what the future may bring.
