- Radiation Protection Services
IRS is one of the longest standing radiation protection advisory services in the UK, with over 30 years experience providing Radiation Protection Advisory services to Breast Screening.
IRS staff were involved in the preliminary clinical investigation into the feasibility of breast screening during the 1970’s, undertaken at Withington Hospital, South Manchester. When the National Breast Screening Programme was established in 1988, following the Forrest Report (1986), IRS played a leading role in the development of radiation protection and medical physics support, including Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) to breast screening at both the national and international levels.
The physics service provided by IRS Ltd operates wholly in accordance with the requirements of NHSBSP Publication 33, Quality Assurance Guidelines for Medical Physics Services. Since 2001, Paul Connolly, RPA and Lead MPE from IRS, has fulfilled the duties of regional medical physics QA co-ordinator for the North West (Mersey) Breast Screening programme, chairing the group from 2008 until 2012. This role involves close liaison with NHSBSP National Office and professional working groups for Physics Quality Assurance, Equipment and the QA Evaluation Group.
Consequently, IRS has a unique understanding and operational experience within this field. We can offer customers an industry leading radiation protection service underpinned by forefront research and development initiatives; initiatives that enhance the Company’s knowledge base and generate new opportunities for developments that impact positively on patient welfare.
Over the course of three decades IRS has expanded its services nationwide. We now provide services to 7 Breast Screening Programmes in the North West and Yorkshire regions involving 25 X-Ray units and associated digital imaging systems.
IRS operates at the forefront of UK medical physics and the cutting-edge of research. We want to offer our customers the benefits of this expertise by providing excellent quality, innovative services in a cost-effective and flexible manner.
