Education

IRS provide radiation protection services to schools, colleges and universities across the UK.

We have extensive experience in supporting the safe use of radiations and radioactive substances in teaching and research environments nationwide.

Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) Services

IRS has a team of highly experienced RPAs who can help you fulfil all legal radiation protection requirements that apply to the education sector.

All IRS RPAs are accredited by RPA 2000, which is a recognised accreditation agent by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). We also hold corporate accreditation as an RPA body with HSE. This ensures IRS can provide co-ordinated, expert advice to national standards.

IRS’s longstanding involvement in the Education sector (Schools, Colleges and Universities), coupled with an industry-leading scientific training programme enables us to provide an effective radiation protection advisory service tailored to your needs.

For schools and colleges, ionising radiations and radioactive substances are employed purely for teaching purposes. In the case of universities, both ionising and non-ionising radiations may also be employed in research and development programmes. Working together, we can assist in the implementation of safe working procedures for you and your staff.

IRS is available for consultation on all appropriate requirements of the current Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR 17).

Whether you already work with radiation sources or are planning to use them in future, here are some of the ways we can help:

  • Staff training
  • Day to day radiation source management
  • Record keeping and auditing
  • Production of documentation; checklists, record sheets etc
  • Standard operating procedures (including contingency plans)
  • Risk assessments
  • Emergency planning
  • Choice and purchase of radioactive sources used in teaching
  • Transportation of radioactive sources
  • Disposal of radioactive sources

Education and Training

Ionising radiations and radioisotopes are employed routinely in schools, colleges and universities as part of teaching programmes. Equally, both ionising and non-ionising radiations are frequently employed in research and development activities within the university and higher education sectors.

IRS is an established and long-standing provider of radiation protection services to educational establishments. We are also one of the most experienced providers of radiation protection services in the UK.

If staff, students or technical support personnel are working with radiation sources on site, we can help ensure they are appropriately trained to operate safely.

IRS routinely host training events at both our Liverpool headquarters and our Midlands office in Lichfield, Staffordshire. We are also able to provide training on-site at customers’ locations throughout the UK.

We ensure that participants on all our courses are fully informed of the necessary legislative requirements and how these might be fulfilled for each and every application of ionising radiations.

For more detailed information on the courses we provide to the education sector, or to book a place at one of our regular events, please see the Education and Training Courses section of our website.
